What is an abdominal wall reconstruction?

Abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) is a surgical procedure designed to repair and restore the integrity and functionality of the abdominal wall, typically after it has been compromised due to trauma, injury, or previous surgical interventions. This procedure is often performed to treat conditions such as abdominal hernias or complex abdominal wall defects. There are several reasons why a person might need abdominal wall reconstruction:

Hernia Repair

Often used to repair large and complex hernias.

Abdominal hernias occur when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weakness or tear in the abdominal wall. These can be caused by various factors, including congenital weaknesses, prior surgeries, or physical strain. Abdominal wall reconstruction is often used to repair hernias such as inguinal, umbilical, incisional, or ventral hernias.

Trauma

Severe trauma, such as car accidents or gunshot wounds, can lead to injuries in the abdominal wall. Abdominal wall reconstruction may be necessary to repair these traumatic defects and restore abdominal structure and function.

Diastasis Recti

Some people with large or troublesome diastasis recti may need an abdominal wall reconstruction to repair the stretched or damaged connective tissue in the centre of their abdomen, the linea alba and reinforce this weakness.

Removal of Tumours

In cases where tumors or cancerous growths are removed from the abdominal wall, reconstruction may be necessary to close the surgical wound and restore abdominal integrity.

Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Techniques

The specific technique used in abdominal wall reconstruction can vary based on the individual patient’s condition and the extent of the damage. Common approaches include using synthetic or biologic mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall, suturing the torn or weakened tissues, or using techniques like component separation to reconstruct the abdominal wall. The choice of technique depends on the patient’s condition and the surgeon’s expertise.

Abdominal wall reconstruction is a complex surgical procedure that aims to restore the structural and functional integrity of the abdominal wall while minimizing the risk of complications and promoting a full recovery.

Techniques we use in abdominal wall construction include:
  • Components Separation
  • Trasversus Abdominis Release
  • Rives Stoppa
  • Abdominoplasty
  • Pre-Operative Botox Injection

A combination of these techniques can be used to improve the appearance and the function of your abdominal wall. This can be done as an open or robotic operation depending on your needs and surgical history.
